Smith used hieratic characters, which are from a later period as the rest of the document. He drew the added characters upside down, that is, he drew them in the opposite direction of the surrounding border characters. This signifies, in Smith's divinely inspired view, that Black people are antipodal to white people. |
Smith's translation of the newly added missing parts (at approx. 1 - 2 o'clock, 4 o'clock and 9 o'clock) have to do with the idea that Black People cannot hold the Mormon priesthood because they are descendents of Cain. |
